In this solo masterclass, John walks through the five steps he took to go from a family medicine physician to a hospital chief medical officer, and how to do so more intentionally than he did. It took him about 20 years. With the right approach, he believes it can be done in far less time.

The five steps are straightforward: 

• Start volunteering in non-clinical hospital roles and say yes to opportunities,
• Find one or more mentors,
• Take on part-time medical director or physician advisor work while still practicing,
• Pursue formal business and management education, and
• Ask for the job. 

John works through each using his own career as the example, including how chairing a hospital CME committee eventually led to a national accreditation role at the ACCME.
