
It’s Coby McConnell here from Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, and believe me, as long as I’ve been in the pest control business, rats and mice have been a major headache for folks here in Clearwater. You might think of our sunny climate as a human paradise, but for rodents, it’s a five-star resort with a year-round breeding season.
Why are rodents such a big deal around here? Well, for one, we don’t have real winters to thin out the population. This means they can breed all year, and a small problem can quickly become a full-blown infestation. A single female rat can produce a lot of pups in a year, and those pups can start reproducing in just a few months. It’s an exponential problem.
Our beautiful coastal environment also provides a perfect habitat for these pests. We have an abundance of food sources, from overgrown landscaping to outdoor trash cans and pet food bowls left outside. All the new construction and development in the Tampa Bay area also play a big part. When we tear down old buildings or disturb land for new ones, we’re basically kicking rats and mice out of their homes and forcing them to find a new place to live—and they often find their way into yours.
