The Mavs Made 1 Historic Move But This Dereck Lively II Decision Says More

The Dallas Mavericks let the NBA extension deadline pass without new deals for Dereck Lively II, Max Christie, and Marcus Sasser, while waiving Dwight Powell and keeping Moussa Cissé. What do these Mavs roster decisions say about the future around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, and is Dereck Lively II now headed for restricted free agency?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit)  breaks down why the Dallas Mavericks didn’t extend Dereck Lively II, what Masai Ujiri’s “free agency is dead” comment means for restricted free agency, and why Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz could still land Lively at a value. Nick also compares Max Christie’s player option and Marcus Sasser’s prove-it year to the deals for Naji Marshall and PJ Washington. He covers the Mavs’ thin ball-handling group behind Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, where Daniel Gafford, Caleb Martin, Santi Aldama, Sergio De Larrea, and Tarik Biberovic fit, and gives a farewell to Dwight Powell’s 12-year Mavs career.
