Welcome to the Monday Minute, brought to you by Auto Analytix — your 52-week guide to a better dealership. A quick reset to help you lead better, think clearer, and build your dealership with intention. Before we get started, make sure you have reviewed Sunday's newsletter. It lays out the full theme for the week, the why behind it, and simple exercises you can work through with your team. The Monday Minute is the mindset. The newsletter is the roadmap.Your best employees are watching. They watched when you let the underperformer slide last month. They are watching right now to see what you are going to do about it. And if the answer keeps being nothing, they are quietly doing the math on whether this is still the right place to work hard.In this episode, Jeff and Luke pick up where last week's employee review conversation left off — and get into the part of leadership most dealers avoid until it is already too late. Jeff makes the case that keeping the wrong employee does not eliminate the problem. It transfers the problem to every good employee on your team. They pick up the slack, absorb the bad attitude, watch someone consistently miss expectations and keep their job anyway — and eventually they start asking why they are working so hard when underperforming is clearly acceptable here. That question does not take six months to spread. It takes six hours. And by the time you feel it, it has already moved through your dealership like a wildfire. None of this means firing someone on their first mistake — people deserve coaching, clear expectations, documented write-ups, and a real opportunity to improve. That is why the last several weeks of the 52-week guide have built toward this moment. When you have done all of that and nothing has changed, the conversation should not come as a shock to anyone. It should be short, private, direct, and respectful. Luke adds the reminder that your team is watching that moment too — how you handle a termination says as much about your leadership as how you handle a promotion. Treat people with dignity on the way out. Offer a letter of recommendation if they are a good person who was not the right fit. And do not argue, do not embarrass, and do not let it drag into a 45-minute debate.Your assignment this week: think about your team and identify the conversation you have been avoiding. Ask yourself honestly — have I coached this employee, have I documented what is happening, and have I given them a legitimate opportunity to improve? If the answer to all three is yes, the question is no longer whether they should go. The question is why you are afraid to make the decision. Every dealer who has let someone go and watched productivity climb immediately knows what happens on the other side of that call. You are not protecting your culture by keeping the wrong people. You protect your culture by removing them.Review this week's Sunday newsletter at TheIndependentDealer.com for the full theme and exercises. Not subscribed yet?
