What happens when we stop clinging to the very things we take ourselves to be? In this Dhamma talk, Bhante Joe explores the five aggregates—form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness—and their role in suffering. Drawing on the Buddha’s simile of the heartwood, he explains why Buddhist practice aims at the ending of suffering, beyond fame, virtue alone, or psychic powers. Understanding the First Noble Truth means recognizing gratification, danger, and escape, rather than merely grasping an idea. Through meditation, we observe the aggregates arising and passing away, recognizing their impermanence and seeing them as not-self. By cultivating virtue, concentration, and dispassion, we incline the mind toward Nibbāna, the stilling of formations and cessation of craving. Learning to let go brings increasing ease and supports our long-term welfare.
