When Gary was 10 years old, he met the Devil. To be sure, the Devil did not introduce himself as such and the boy was too young to recognise him for what he was.

Gary lives in a sleepy Ulster town and in the spring of 2004, as he was making his way home from school, something told him not to take his customary route but to veer down a footpath that runs alongside a small river.
