How can meditation help us find happiness beyond the constant pursuit of pleasure? In this Dhamma talk, Bhante Joe explains why sensual pleasures lose their appeal and how Buddhist practice offers a different direction. Drawing on the Dhammapada, he explores the mind’s role in happiness, the power of habits and clinging, and the gradual training of the Noble Eightfold Path. He describes mindfulness as remembering and keeping something in mind, using the example of an untrained dog to illustrate mental training. Practical reflections on the five precepts show how ethical conduct supports meditation, while the carpenter simile explains why practice requires adaptable skill. By strengthening wholesome qualities, weakening unwholesome habits, and developing dispassion, these Buddhist teachings help cultivate inner peace and a mind better prepared for illness, loss, and difficulty.
