Brian Kelly says LSU football is "not in the business of buying players." | Right or wrong approach?

LSU head football coach Brian Kelly sat down with WAFB Sports Director Jacques Doucet to discuss the state of the program, looking back on his first two seasons, looking ahead to the future, and the most pressing questions Tigers fans have about the upcoming college football season. Kelly said after the spring game that defensive tackle was their main focus in the spring transfer portal period, so why is LSU yet to sign one?

One part of Kelly's answer to this question went viral on social media and has received a lot of feedback, mostly criticism, from fans and college football insiders. Kelly said, "we are not in the business of buying players." To be fair, everyone in college football is in the business of paying for players and if a program is not then that program will not compete. For example, Dabo Swinney has struggled the past couple of seasons at Clemson after a very public stance against the transfer portal and utilizing NIL opportunities. However, Kelly does not share that same philosophy. But is his philosophy the right one?
