Matos/Masei - The Journey After Failure

In Parshas Matos/Masei, the Torah records the forty-two journeys of Klal Yisrael through the Midbar. At first glance, the list seems like history that will never happen again. But the Baal Shem Tov teaches that every person has his own forty-two journeys.

In this shiur, delivered by Rav Burg in Camp Morasha, we explore why the Torah records not only the places where Klal Yisrael succeeded, but also the places where they failed: Refidim, Kivros HaTaavah, and the painful stops along the way.

Through Rashi’s mashal of the father reviewing the journey with his healed son, we discover a powerful way to look at our own failures. Denial says, “I cannot look.” Shame says, “I looked, and now I cannot get up.” Torah teaches a third way: I was there, but I traveled from there.

Failure does not have to define us. It can become part of the map that shows us how far we have come.
