PADRES POSTCAST: San Diego Padres Rally Falls Short | Blue Jays Take Series Opener 5-3 at Petco

The Padres dug themselves an early hole after a disastrous fifth inning and couldn’t complete a late comeback, falling 5-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of the final series before the All-Star break.

 

Xander Bogaerts gave San Diego an early spark with a two-run homer in the first inning, but Toronto answered with five unanswered runs, highlighted by Okamoto’s three-run blast in the fifth that proved to be the difference.

 

The Padres finally showed some life in the ninth as Luis Campusano, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill strung together hits to cut the deficit to two, but the rally ended with the tying run stranded.

 

JP Sears pitched well early before running into trouble, while the bullpen settled things down after the fifth. The offense, however, disappeared for seven innings before making things interesting at the very end.
