Why do Americans love SUVs so much?

I think all of us can agree that when you pull into pretty much any grocery store parking lot, you're bound to be met with a sea of SUVs, usually all either white, silver, or black in color.... what is going on? Are the soccer moms taking over officially now, or do Americans just feel safer driving bigger cars? Do we really need all that space?
