Nick Pivetta pitched 6 strong innings, Manny Machado and Ryan O’Hearn each had 2 hits and an RBI, the bullpen slammed the door shut as usual, and the San Diego Padres bounced back with a 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants at sold-out Petco Park that snapped their 4-game losing streak and keep them within 2 games of the LA Dodgers in the NL West.
Pivetta- nicknamed "the stopper" by the Padres' TV announcers because he is now 8-2 (team 10-3) in his starts that have followed a San Diego loss- reversed a 3-game disaster of a trend that saw Dylan Cease, Yu Darvish and Nestor Cortes give up 11 total runs in the 1st inning(s) of those games, all San Diego losses. The right-hander gave up a solo home run to Jung Hoo Lee to lead off the game, walked 2 hitters later in the 1st inning, but escaped the jam and only allowed 3 more hitters to reach base the rest of the way as the Padres kept chipping away and eventually broke through.
Pivetta struck out 10 Giants' hitters to beat San Francisco for the 2nd time in a week. He did not pitch in the 3-game sweep the Padres suffered at the hands of the Dodgers last weekend. At a salary of $4.5 million, Pivetta has been the absolute ace of the San Diego staff this season.
O'Hearn, an all-start this season who for some reason continues to not have a regular starting role on this team despite being a power-hitting 1st baseman/DH who hits lefties well- started at DH after entering at 1st last night when Jake Cronenworth left after being hit by a pitch.
Machado's game-tying RBI groundout in the 1st inning gave him his 1st run batted in this month. He leads the Padres with 73. Jose Iglesias added an RBI single, and Fernando Tatis Jr. reached base 4 times, scored a run and drove in another on a bases-loaded walk.
All-Star relievers Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon and Robert Suarez each threw a scoreless inning in back of Pivetta, as the San Diego bullpen continues to be the best in the majors this season.
The Padres- 8-3 against the Giants this season- would love to finish out this series with 2 wins in a row before welcoming in the Dodgers for a 3-game series this weekend with 1st place on the line. The Padres are 2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card race.
