PADRES POSTCAST: San Diego PADRES LOSE 6-2 in Opener @ AZ D’Backs, JP SEARS RIPPED in PADS’ DEBUT

JP Sears got ripped by the D’Backs- giving up 5 earned runs on 10 hits and allowing at least 1 run in each of the 1st 4 innings in a forgettable Padres’ debut, as the Pads fell 6-2 in game 1 at Arizona.

Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in a pair of runs to lead the D’Backs.

Tyler Locklear and the red-hot Alek Thomas hit solo home runs for Arizona, which has won 3 in a row after losing 9 of 10.

Brandon Pfaadt (11-7) gave up 2 runs in 5 2/3 innings for the D’Backs, escaping a couple of jams to protect what was a 2-run lead.

Pfaadt also walked Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez back-to-back to start the game, and held the Padres without a run.

He left with runners on 1st & 3rd & 2 outs in the 6th, and was replaced by Andrew Hoffman with runners at 1st and 3rd and 2 out. Hoffman got Ryan O’Hearn to fly out to end the threat and pitched a 1-2-3 7th before Kyle Backhis came on to pitch the 8th & 9th for his 1st career save.

Gurriel singled off Sears (7-10) to drive in Ketel Marte and give Arizona a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Carroll hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded that drove in Blaze Alexander- who walked to lead off the inning- and made it 2-0.

The Pads got on the board when Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill hit back-to-back doubles with 2 outs in the 3rd, with Jackson driving Manny in.

In the 6th, Gavin Sheets drew a 2-out walk, moved to 2nd when Ramón Laureano singled and scored on a single by Jake Cronenworth to cut the D’Backs’ lead to 5-2. Then O’Hearn flew out to end the inning.

The Pads are at Arizona for game 2 of this 3-game series against the D’Backs tomorrow night in Phoenix, with 1st pitch set for 6:40 PT.

Yu Darvish (1-3, 6.46 ERA) will start for the Padres. Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.20) will take the mound for the D’Backs.
